The main character also has some interesting special abilities, including psychometry and speaking to the dead. There’s an awful lot more to it than that, but one of the major tensions in the game comes from the animancers who claim they can solve the problem but are, quite understandably, seen as a serious menace in themselves – what with all their soul-powered robots and heretical experiments. Since this isn’t an official Dungeons & Dragons title the game takes place in the land of Drywood, which is suffering from a curse where babies are being born without a soul. Pillars Of Eternity attempts to recreate the look and feel of those old games, and without any concessions to modernisation or current fads. But in their previous incarnation as Black Isle Studios they worked on many of the other games that used Baldur’s Gate’s Infinity Engine technology – most notably Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale I and II. Or at least they were back in 2015, when the game originally came out on PC.Ī lot has changed since then and now Larian Studios are working on an actual Baldur’s Gate III and developer Obsidian has been bought by Microsoft and have sci-fi adventure The Outer Worlds coming out in just a few months. In all but trademarked title this is the second sequel to BioWare’s classic series, that fans have been demanding for over a decade. It’s so completely forgettable that we still found ourselves double-checking it before this review, but there’s a good reason for that: its real name is Baldur’s Gate III. It is not clear if the Switch's hardware limitations are the reason for Versus Evil's decision to no longer bring Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire to Nintendo's hybrid console.Pillars Of Eternity may well have the most generic name in video game history.

Versus Evil cited the Switch's hardware as the reason for this decision, stating it had, "reached a limit on what we can do with our updates to the game and have exhausted the options left to us from the PC original in regards to the limitations of the hardware we are working with". However, in February of last year, the publisher announced it would no longer be releasing any more updates for its Switch version of the game.
Meanwhile, in 2019, it was revealed that Obsidian's original Pillars of Eternity would be coming to the Switch. Since then, however, the game was delayed, and then it just sort of fell off the radar. It was first announced that Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire would be coming to the Switch all the way back in 2018. "Hey there! Unfortunately, after much deliberation, we have decided not to move forward with Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire for the Nintendo Switch", Versus Evil wrote (via reddit). Publisher Versus Evil announced its plans to cancel its Switch version of the game on Discord.
For those patiently waiting to hear more about Obsidian's RPG Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire and its arrival on the Nintendo Switch, there's bad news: it is no longer coming.
